Damien Memorial Shines in National STEM Competition

Damien Memorial School is making waves in the world of STEM! Building on the momentum from last year’s impressive performance—where a freshman group ranked in the top 10% nationally in the Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision Competition—Damien has expanded its presence in 2025 with ten student teams earning Honorable Mention recognition in this prestigious, nationwide challenge.

The ExploraVision program encourages students to explore cutting-edge technology and imagine how it might evolve in the future, helping them develop real-world skills in problem solving, research, and science communication. Each team follows a detailed project format, including a written proposal, project development timeline, and visual components, designed to simulate how real scientists and engineers bring innovations to life.

This year’s participants tackled a wide array of global challenges with creativity and critical thinking. Here’s a look at Damien's outstanding project teams:

  • ARSE: Cjason Ikeno, Sophia Capili, Kaleb Hattal

  • Carbon Dioxide Emissions On Our Planet: Samantha Gubatan, Michelle Lee

  • Distilling Drones: Ciana Aquino, Mikayla Saito, Abigail Pasion

  • The Aquatic Collector: Ashton Hiapo-Santos, Kaison Kidder, Luka Manansala

  • Cancer Laser Treatment Machine: Alyssa Viernes, Kailee Deuz

  • The Cure for Vitiligo: Alynna Arquero, Kyree Brown

  • Solar Vacuum 1: Kingsten Bajet-Kalauokaaea, Naulumaikalani Kekoa, Shaesten Pakele-Akau, Chayzen Perez-Garcia

  • Pawsitive: Hailey Ganitano, Kalehiwa Nakanelua-Kepa

  • Escape From Vape: Noah Garcia, Keitlin Tomomitsu, Makena Mayo

  • Heat Stroke Hat Helper (H.S.H.H): John Louis Nathan Guilaran, Kekoa Hanapi-Awana

These projects reflect not only the students’ dedication but also Damien Memorial’s growing emphasis on STEM education. At the heart of this movement is Mr. Michael Casem, who has been instrumental in inspiring young innovators. In addition to mentoring these ExploraVision teams, Mr. Casem also leads Damien’s Robotics Club, where students are given hands-on experience in engineering, coding, and teamwork.

As the school continues to nurture scientific curiosity and technological creativity, we celebrate the achievements of these young minds. Their recognition in a national arena demonstrates Damien Memorial’s commitment to preparing students for the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow.

Congratulations to all of our ExploraVision teams! Your hard work and innovation are truly making a difference. Keep dreaming, designing, and discovering!
