Building Character Through Service with Lyon Arboretum Conservation Efforts

February 18th marked a day of learning and service for the 6th grade class of 2031. Led by Jeffery McGivern, Head of Campus Ministry, students dedicated their time to giving back to their community by partnering with Lyon Arboretum, nestled in the upper reaches of Manoa Valley. This unique experience provided a valuable lesson in Hawaiian history and the critical role of conservation.

The students delved into the story of Hawaii's past, learning how invasive plant species were introduced to the islands and the devastating impact these non-native plants can have on the delicate Hawaiian ecosystem. They discovered how these invaders disrupt the balance of nature, threatening native flora and fauna.

Working with Liloa Dunn, Head Botanist, and guides Maka and Tylor Schwarts; the students gained hands-on experience in identifying native Hawaiian plants. They also learned practical steps to protect these vital species from the encroachment of harmful invasive plants. This immersive activity fostered a sense of responsibility and stewardship for the environment.

Lyon Arboretum, a 200-acre botanical garden and research facility managed by the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, provided the perfect setting for this educational endeavor. Beyond its stunning natural beauty, the Arboretum plays a crucial role in preserving Hawaii's unique biodiversity. It offers a variety of educational programs, like the one the 6th graders participated in, designed to engage the community in conservation efforts and foster an appreciation for the natural world. These programs, as detailed on the Lyon Arboretum website (

https://manoa.hawaii.edu/lyon/), cover a wide range of topics, from plant identification and Hawaiian culture to sustainable practices and ecological restoration. The Arboretum serves as a living laboratory, inspiring future generations to become passionate advocates for the environment. The 6th grade class of 2031's participation exemplifies this mission, demonstrating how service and education can combine to build character and create a lasting impact on the community.
