Foodland’s Give Aloha Program
Aloha Damien Memorial School Ohana,
Foodland’s Give Aloha Program starts today, September 1 through September 30, 2022. With many requests on your resources, please know that we are grateful for any gift you can share.
Here’s how the program works:
- At Foodland, Sack N Save or Foodland Farms checkout, present your Maika’i card to donate and designate Damien Memorial School, #77030, as the receiving organization. If you do not have a Maika’i card, you can establish one at checkout.
- Donations of up to $249 per organization made with your Maika’i card will be partially matched by Foodland and Western Union Foundation. These marching funds will also be given to Damien.
- All donations are tax-deductible. Keep your donation receipt for your tax records.
- To be individually acknowledged for your gift, please mail your receipt to Damien’s Advancement Office at 1401 Houghtailing St., Honolulu, HI 96817.
To increase available matching funds, Foodland added these features this year:
- Donate 250 Maika‘i points to make a $5 donation to Give Aloha.
- Purchase Give Aloha merchandise designed by local artist Shar Tuiasoa of Punky Aloha.
- Donate spare change in coin cannisters at checkout.
- Round up grocery purchases and donate the difference to Give Aloha.
In honor of our 60th Anniversary, please consider making a $60 donation. Your support gives a child access to a Monarch education. Viriliter Age!
With warm mahalo,
Liza C. Lee, MBA
Director of Advancement
Return to Campus
Good Afternoon,
I am pleased to announce that we will resume face-to-face learning on campus next week. I would first like to thank everyone for their patience and cooperation. Your support continues to be helpful in Damien Memorial’s commitment to keeping our students’ health and safety a priority. Secondly, a return to campus in no way means that we are returning to normal. State and county numbers are still high but are expected to begin to decline next week. Reports of infection continue to come in within our own school population, although also declining.
I’ve attached our updated Return to School Plan that was originally sent out at the start of this school year. Outlined below are some reminders and updates.
All health and safety protocols from the beginning of the school year continue.
1) All students and staff must wear a mask at all times. Sports gaiters are not permitted. Those not in compliance will be sent home. N95 or medical masks are recommended.
2) All students must complete the daily Covid-19 Prescreening before arriving to campus.
3) Temperature check taken upon arrival. If a student’s temperature exceeds 100.00F the student will be sent home.
4) School operation hours are 6:30am to 3:30pm. Damien Memorial is a closed campus. Visitors without approved school business will not be allowed. If your child arrives between 6:30am to 7:00am, they are to report directly to the cafeteria. If your child is not involved in DMS sanctioned sports or extracurricular activities, your child must leave campus by 3:30pm.
5) Continue to practice safety protocols below:
Please let Ms. Paishon know immediately if you need a face mask during school hours.
Students who wish to practice additional safety protocols such as wearing a safety shield in addition to a mask or double masking are highly encouraged to do so.
6) School Safety Mitigation
Cleaning between classes
Both classroom doors will remain open for ventilation
Each day after instruction has ended, a thorough, deep cleaning will be performed.
If you have any updates to your child’s vaccination status, please send it to health@damien.edu.
Protocols for COVID-19 positive test or experiencing flu/COVID-like symptoms:
1) If a student tests positive for Covid-19 OR is experiencing flu-like symptoms, immediately notify attendance@damien.edu.
2) Submit test results and isolate for 5 days if fully vaccinated, 10 days if unvaccinated.
3) Student must be fever-free (temperature of 99-degrees or lower) for 24-hours, without any fever-reducing medication.
4) Doctor's note clearing student to resume school.
Protocols for COVID-19 Exposure:
1) If a student is made aware they are in close contact with a Covid+ person, isolate for 5 days if fully vaccinated, 10 if unvaccinated, and take a Covid test on the 5th day from last exposure. Send results to attendance@damien.edu.
If fully vaccinated, a rapid at home test is accepted.
If unvaccinated, a PCR test must be completed.
Please note: Instructional Format - No hybrid/online learning via Blackboard Collaborate will be available. If students are absent due to illness, they are responsible for completing the work posted to Blackboard for each class and to remain in communication with their teachers.
COVID-19 Testing On-Campus
Damien Memorial School will be offering free Covid testing for our students via Monarch Diagnostics, LLC (not related to school), who will be administering the testing on our campus on designated days.
You must register your student(s) to be tested using the QR code and link(https://curogram.com/registrations/61d654e2f997107cede7a3af) provided.
It would be best to use a cell phone to complete the process as you will need to upload a form of identification.
We will be using this service to test all our student-athletes before their competitions, but it is also open to any Damien student who would like to get tested.
Dates and times of the testing will be forthcoming and posted on Blackboard.
Students can check BlackBoard for more specific information pertaining to the school day.
Our goal was always to return to campus in the safest time and way possible. I’m sure students and families are excited to return to campus. Our faculty and staff are also anticipating a safe, thriving campus once again. We will need everyone’s cooperation, especially on campus, in order to remain safe and healthy.
Mahalo,
Dr. Kyle J. Atabay

Distance Learning 1/10/22 Through 1/14/22
Aloha
Thank you for your flexibility in dealing with the current surge in positive COVID-19 infections. The response to our decision to go online has been generally positive and we appreciate your understanding. Our school administration met this morning and we have decided to continue online learning for next week. This decision is based on the following:
1) Our school population infection rate of 24% (that’s students and adults) of
reported positive cases this week,
2) The expected and continued rise in the infection rates overall in our state.
Next week’s schedule online will be A-B-C-B-C.
From the Athletic Department:
Our ILH game schedules for basketball, soccer, wrestling, and paddling will begin next week Monday, 1/10. Each coach has the most recent schedule for their sport. It is also posted on the ILH website. Practices for our sports teams will continue as planned.
Due to the high number of positive Covid cases, the league has decided to have NO SPECTATORS at on-campus games at this time (games that are played at city and county sites fall under their guidelines). If the numbers start to lower as the weeks progress, we will revisit this policy and revise it if necessary.
All of our Damien home basketball games will be live-streamed on our Damien Athletics YouTube page. For away games, the home-site will live-steam through their website.
Thank you for your patience with all of the changes. Our main goal is to provide the safest opportunity for our student-athletes to participate in ILH sports.
The campus will be closed for the week and no visitors will be allowed. The Welcome Center personnel will be in and only with a previously scheduled appointment will you be able to enter through the main office (temperature check and mask required).
Lastly, our goal is to get back to face-to-face teaching and learning and reopen campus. However, there are many factors that point to a risky situation if we brought students back to campus at this time. We appreciate your support in this decision and we will continue to communicate our plans in a timely manner so that you can plan accordingly for your own family needs.

Happy New Year 2022!
Aloha
Happy New Year 2022! I hope this communication finds you and your family well as we close out this blessed season of Christmas.
Closing out 2021 is another story. Other than the current rainy weather, the biggest news pertains to COVID-19 and the Omicron surge nationally, and more importantly, locally. Campus leadership has decided that we will open this semester with online learning. Therefore, for this week, Wednesday through Friday (Schedule A-BC), we will keep the campus closed and hold all classes online.
This decision is based on the following:
• The general local increase in COVID-19 infections
• Current infections of students and personnel
• A number of students/families as well as personnel have traveled out-of-state over the break; some still traveling. Home isolation is a safe choice.
With the expected further increase in infections, the three days will allow campus leadership to discuss and plan for the remainder of the semester – especially the immediate future. Up to this point, we have not made vaccination mandatory for students and personnel and have no plans to do so. This choice, however, makes remaining on campus more challenging. Our goal is to continue face-to-face learning as much as possible, but this will also require cooperation from everyone.
GENERAL REMINDERS:
• Our previous COVID19 response stands and any changes will be additional requirementsguidelines.
• Masks are a must on campus, inside and outside. Double masking or N-95 masks are encouraged. NOTE: Gaiter masks NOT permitted as they are not recommended by the DOH or CDC.
• We will continue to social distance and group as best as possible.
• If anyone in your household is any kind of sick, please keep your child at home!
• Although a personal choice, please consider vaccination if you are not yet vaccinated.
• Get your booster shot if you are vaccinated and have not yet done so.
• If there is any concern for your health, please get tested for COVID19.

ATHLETICS
All athletic competition this week is postponed per the ILH.
Athletic competition is planned to resume on January 10, 2022. Please check directly with your child’s coach for more details regarding an individual sport.

A-Day Schedule Online
November 06, 2021
Good morning Damien ‘Ohana,
I have some very important news to share regarding school next week. Yesterday, during our second lunch period, we experienced a power outage. We naturally expected the power to restore quickly but when it didn’t we made a call to the usual electrician that we use for assistance. The electrician shared that the 60 year old main breaker for the campus power source is no longer functional and can not be repaired. Several replacements were tried, but were not adequate or safe for the campus power system. The correct breaker has been located, off island, and is being shipped. The earliest possible arrival date is Monday. Because it was so close to the end of the school day, we sent out communication to the campus as well as to our families regarding the immediate situation and the need to clear the campus as soon as possible. We also cancelled all athletic events, including practices, for the day/evening.
With the necessary work comes the effects on the physical campus. We have decided to keep the campus clear on both Monday and Tuesday and move school online via Blackboard. Students will login to Blackboard Collaborate to attend online classes. The two days will follow an A-day Online Schedule allowing teachers and students to “meet” with all of their classes.
All campus events and activities are also suspended as the campus will be completely shut down.
Our plan is to return to campus on Wednesday (C Day) and Friday (B Day) as Thursday is the Veteran’s Day holiday. As we know, plans don’t always go smoothly so if the work is not completed by Tuesday we will most likely have to remain online. We will communicate updates if and when it comes to that point so please make sure to check your email regularly for updates.
Thank you once again for your patience and understanding as we work through this situation. Our intention, as always, is to provide the best possible learning environment for our students.
Mahalo,
Dr. Atabay

An Era of Championships
August 18, 2021
Aloha families of Damien Memorial School,
Athletics:
As you may already know, Eddie Klaneski ’93 had resigned from his position as Damien Athletic Director and Varsity Football Head Coach. His last day will be Friday, 8/20/21. During his employment at Damien, he raised the bar for all our athletes and coaches. He ushered a new era of championships that have gained our school a solid reputation in sports. We are grateful for his time with us and wish him the best on his new journey.
In the interim, we have a transition plan in place which includes Mr. Anthony Tuitele ’09 leading the football team and Ms. Shawna Lau Kong as lead liaison with the ILH. Your continuing support and collaboration will be much appreciated during this transition.
We will evaluate our athletic program needs and develop a plan and timeline for a more permanent solution to the job vacancy. As we are not yet ready to start the recruitment process at this time, please continue to check our website for future announcements.
Medical forms/records:
As we do our fall review of student medical records, we are noticing incomplete files and/or old records. Please contact Jill Sanford (jsanford@damien.edu) to update or provide any documents; or if you have any questions regarding your child’s school medical records file.
Mahalo,
Dr. Kyle J. Atabay, ‘84

DMS Parent App Information
August 17, 2021
Aloha Damien Memorial Families,
I would like to introduce the Damien app, which is a great way to stay connected and informed. You will be able to monitor your child(ren) grades, attendance, lunch account balance and email teachers/staff directly from the app. The app will also provide you with updates and information regarding school news.
If you are new to the Damien parent app -- Your username and password will be sent in a separate email directly from BlackBoard. Please check your Spam/Junk folder if you do not receive the information from Blackboard. Login information will be sent to NEW USERS ONLY.
The grades and attendance seen in the parent app will usually be 1-day behind real time grades. This is due to the data sync that occurs Monday thru Friday at 4:30 am HST. If you would like to see your child's current grade -- please have him/her login to their student account to show you each course's grade.
Attached you will find instructions on how to download and access the app. Should you have any questions, please email me at hfournier@damien.edu
Sincerely,
Hyon Fournier

Parent Newsletter: August 9, 2021
ALOHA
We have completed our first week of school and included in this newsletter are the observations that we have made since the start and reminders and improvements that we know will make things work more effectively.
Additionally, my thought is to provide a monthly update via this newsletter. COVID-19 unfortunately still dominates the current scene but we are determined to remain on campus and get back to normal as much as possible. Should more frequent communication be necessary because of the pandemic situation, I will send that out as necessary via email. We are grateful for your cooperation and patience in this new school year – closer to normal, yet still full of challenges. One of those challenges is the ongoing roadwork on Houghtailing Street. Please know that Damien is not responsible for that work and had no say in this city project. Should you have any questions or complaints, you can contact the city directly at 808-219-7009 (www.awasewer.org).
Dr. Kyle J. Atabay

LUNCH
If your child has not yet received his/her ID, lunch can still be purchased without a one. Lunch will be charged to their account by providing their first/last name at the cash register. Payschool allows you the capability to load money into your child’s account and make crediting their account automatic. Although the use of cash is acceptable during lunch, it will slow down the process of the lunch line. Please contact our business office if you have questions on Payschool (payschools.com). To remedy the large numbers of students in one lunch period as well as ease the transition foot traffic of students between lunch periods, we have restructured the lunch periods to three (versus two) periods. We will begin the new lunch schedule this week. Outside space is also used for the lunch periods so as not to crowd the cafeteria.
UNIFORMS
As Dennis Uniform is currently backed up on orders, temporary dress code for new students is solid color polo and solid color shorts (appropriate length). Our expectation is that the appropriate uniform pieces will be obtained as soon as Dennis’ merchandise is in. Returning/continuing students can wear the previous Damien uniform (black/purple polos with D/Lion logo, khaki shorts/skorts) for the duration of this school year – these are only items that were purchased through Dennis previously. Since last school year, Dennis has sold only the new uniform articles which will be required for all students next school year.
ATHLETICS
Aloha Damien Parents,
There will be a mandatory Code of Conduct meeting this Wednesday, August 11 at 6:30pm in the Damien gym for all parents of any student-athlete who is participating in a Fall sports program. This includes girls’ volleyball, football, cross country, bowling, and cheer for all levels. We are asking that only one parent attend the meeting to help keep the numbers down.
As a reminder, please make sure that your sons and daughters continue to always wear their masks while on campus. We have had to remind many of them that even though they are playing outdoor sports, we still require masks to be worn unless they are at practice. Masks are required to be worn in the locker rooms, weight rooms and any other indoor space at all times. The only time masks may be taken off is during outdoor activities and practices.
With the case counts rising each day, we want to ensure that we are keeping all our players, coaches, faculty, and staff safe here at Damien.
An update from the ILH office was released August 4, 2021. Please see the attached letter concerning ILH sports. At this time, all ILH sports will be played as is scheduled besides Varsity football, pending any PARENT NEWSLETTER AUGUST 9, 2021 changes from the HHSAA. The ILH is now requiring studentathletes to be fully vaccinated or tested weekly if participating in a high contact sport. For the fall, this includes football and cheer. They are also strongly recommending all student-athletes get vaccinated. If your son or daughter is not fully vaccinated, they will need to be tested 24 hours prior to the competition. More info about our testing protocols will be given at the mandatory code of conduct meeting on Wednesday.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Coach Eddie. Email:klaneski@damien. edu or call (808) 440-9514. Mahalo for your continued support and keeping our Damien community safe.
- Coach Eddie
STUDENT SCHEDULES
Schedule change requests were due last Friday. No more schedule changes will be made this semester.
BLACKBOARD
Please be on the lookout for information and logins for the Damien Parent App, Parentlink, which will go out by the end of this week
ATTENDANCE
Reminder to parents that Attendance for the day needs to be reported no later 9:00 am via attendance@damien.edu OR (808) 440-9567. Early Dismissal requests should be reported by 9:00 am as well. Please review our Attendance Policy available in the ParentStudent handbook, pages 18-19.
Please review our Travel Policy available in the Return-toSchool Guide, Part. 1, slide 18. One week notification for travel is REQUIRED.
BUSINESS OFFICE
Re-enrollment of returning/continuing students is an annual requirement. Not doing so will result in no access to important school tools like Blackboard. We certainly understand that families may fall into financial hardship but we also need to be informed of such circumstances as soon as possible. When we don’t hear from you, our assumption is that you are choosing to be delinquent in your account and not hearing from you only supports that assumption. Financial hardship circumstances require us to work together.
ADVANCEMENT OFFICE
Foodland's Give Aloha Program begins on September 1 and ends on September 30. Help Damien receive donations and matching funds by using your Maikaʻi Card while shopping at Foodland, Sack 'N' Save and Foodland Farms in-store or online and designating Damien as the receiving charitable organization. Mahalo for your kokua!
MAHALO!
New Student Orientation - We would like to express our gratitude to the over 40 student volunteers in grades 7 - 12 who lead the New Student Orientation on August 2. These volunteers gave up a portion of their summer to receive training for the day from the orientation planners - Mr. Jeff McGivern (Campus Ministry), Mr. Baron Kaholokula (History), Mr. Shane Chambers (Theology), and Mr. Phil Balmores (English). We would also like to acknowledge Mrs. Dee Arecchi (6h Grade) and Mr. Sean Tyree (Art/Science) for their time and guidance to the middle school volunteers.
The volunteers demonstrated our school’s values - respect, responsibility, and community mindedness - throughout the day and acted as role models to their peers.
Some student responses to their orientation experience:
"The best part of the orientation was that we got to see the campus so we do not get lost during the school time. We had very good students that led the orientation and they were very nice to all of us."
"Something that I very much enjoyed about the student orientation was being able to meet new people before school actually started. Also just being able to learn more about sports. Then the thing that really stood out was all of the activities and prizes we were able to play for. I'm very thankful that I went to the student orientation. It was very fun and if I didn't go, I know for sure I would have been very nervous and clueless.
"The musical chairs was very fun to watch. Also, the fashion show. I learned about what to wear and not what to wear."
"The best part of the New Student orientation was the school tour and learning a little about some of the places on campus and the tradition and history that comes with it."
Mahalo to our orientation volunteers for their good work in helping to create a positive community. We look forward to a productive school year.

ALOHA
It’s been a little over a month since graduation 2021 and we have been busy closing off the school year as well as preparing for the fall semester. The pictures below show views of the road work from a couple of weeks ago that is happening at the main entrance to campus. Currently, our main entrance is completely blocked and if entering our parking lot, you will need to go to what would normally be the exit and enter there. As a reminder, our summer office hours are from Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.
As shared in the last newsletter, families are encouraged to have your children vaccinated when eligible in order to assist in the fight against the further spread of COVID-19. We intend on a full return to campus next school year. To date, we have only heard from a handful of families who are choosing to remain online. Please contact Ms. Paishon (npaishon@damien.edu) to discuss your individual circumstance should that be necessary. Otherwise, we look forward to receiving all students to campus in the fall. We hope to get student schedules out possibly by next week. At this time it is safe to share that our campus will be open daily form 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Only for athletics and other preapproved school events will students be allowed to remain on campus after 4 p.m. Finally, our school website is currently under construction and we hope to get it up and functioning by the end of week.

April 6 Newsletter
Aloha,
I hope that you all had a wonderful Easter Break and got to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord with loved ones. With Easter in our past, we will quickly be at the end of our school year.
As more of our population become vaccinated and numbers of positive cases are somewhat under control, it is safe to say that we will at least begin next school year in our current state. Should the situation improve, adjustments will be made to bring more students to campus on a more regular basis. Also, at this point, the option to remain at home for distance learning will stand. As we get closer to the end of the current school year we will ask families to confirm your selection of this option.
For the time being, it is extremely important that we all do not let our guard down – all basic protocols for health and safety are still encouraged and in place. Here on campus it is important for our students to cooperate with the protocols as they have done so well since returning to campus.
Students are reminded to make sure that they always use their school ID when on campus. Also, please make sure that student meal accounts have sufficient funds to pay for their meals while on campus.

Damien Memorial School guides students from all walks of life in becoming responsible, respectful and community-minded men and women prepared to excel in higher education and ready for the challenges in their future. As a community of faith missioned by the Roman Catholic Church, we espouse the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ as exemplified in the Essential Elements of an Edmund Rice Christian Brother Education and through the selfless service of Saint Damien of Moloka`i.
